This is a very common question. Sometimes I forget that you have to start from the beginning. With that first conscious breath. So lets start from the beginning. Meditation it kind of mysterious. I hear people say all the time that they don't know how or would like to learn. Its is in one way very simple and on the other so so hard to do. If you think about noticing a small child that is laying on the floor, when they are starting to fall asleep, staring up at the ceiling. In a zone of sorts, that could be a state of meditation. When you "sit" in meditation you allow your mind to empty. When your mind is not chugging along with our thought train, it makes room for new information to come in. We tend to create circles of thoughts that are not very original when we let our thoughts run around worrying about things we cannot control. Today I am going to give you a very simple prescription to quite your mind and let it rest.
In a few easy steps:
Find a comfortable place to relax. You always see people sitting in a cross legged position, with their hands in a particular delicate pinched up flowery position. I think seeing pictures of people meditating sometimes discourages people from trying because it looks organized and complicated. When I say find a comfy spot I mean anywhere. Sitting, laying down or reclining. As long as you are comfortable, that is what is important.
We are going to focus on the most basic why to approach meditation. Breath.... That's all. close your eyes and breath. We do that all the time right? This time though I want you to concentration on your breathe. Not anything else. Watch it, as you breath in and out. You may notice things like: you only breath with the top of your chest, your breath is shallow or you may easily take in nice deep breaths. To start with don't judge. Just watch and say... I am breathing in, I am breathing out. That all I want you to think and do today. It is a very good start. It helps you do many things, this simple practice. It helps you stop the spins in your mind. It helps you begin to listen to your body, understand where your body feel good or uncomfortable. While you narrow your focus to just your breath, you broaden your awareness of how your feel residing in your own body.
If you can, try to sit there for at least 10 breaths. It only takes a couple minutes, but sometimes will feel like more when you first start. In time you will find it very relaxing and the best part is you will always feel better and more clear after.
